FRANKFURT (AFP) German auto maker Volkswagen announced Monday that it had acquired a 49.9-percent stake in luxury sports car-maker Porsche for 3.9 billion euros (5.8 billion dollars).

Last week, Volkswagen shareholders overwhelmingly approved a capital increase aimed at financing the purchase. The vote will allow Volkswagen to raise about 8.0 billion euros by 2014.

Europe’s biggest auto maker plans to complete the takeover of Porsche by 2011 and wants to eclipse Toyota, the world auto leader, by 2018.

Volkswagen predicted that the acquisition of Porsche would mean an annual increase in operating earnings of around 700 million euros.

DETROIT, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ — The North American steel industry is continuing its efforts to develop new advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) technologies that will help meet new emissions and fuel economy demands, according to Ron Krupitzer, vice president of automotive applications for AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI). Krupitzer spoke at the Bloomberg Cars and Fuels Briefing today at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

“New steels are the preferred environmental material of choice when it comes to lowering emissions, fuel consumption and energy intensity of vehicles,” said Krupitzer. “In fact, new steels have enabled mass reductions in vehicles of 25 percent or more, while advances in steelmaking technology have lowered the energy required to produce steel by 33 percent from 1990 through 2007.”

The Bloomberg Cars and Fuels Briefing is a one-day event attended by investors, policy makers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and scientists in the transportation and energy fields. In addition to a number of presentations moderated by noted Bloomberg journalists, the event encourages interaction with some of the industry’s most influential thinkers and leaders.

According to Krupitzer, when one considers the total vehicle life cycle, steel is the most environmentally effective choice for automakers because of its three-fold benefits: relatively low energy and emissions during the manufacturing phase; significant mass reduction with AHSS during the driving phase; and 100 percent recyclability at the end of the vehicle’s life.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) assists automakers in evaluating and reducing the total energy and greenhouse gas emissions associated with their products. LCA can help carmakers make better decisions in the selection of structural materials for future cars and trucks.

Krupitzer also discussed the steel industry’s extensive history of research in advanced steel vehicle concepts, including UltraLight Steel Auto Body (ULSAB) and Auto/Steel Partnership projects. He also gave examples of vehicles on the road making good use of AHSS and reported that these grades have become the fastest growing materials in today’s new vehicles.

Through the work of automakers and steel company engineers, steel continues to address new demands and remains the dominant automotive material, making up 60 percent of the average North American vehicle.

“Our latest design project with WorldAutoSteel and EDAG is called Future Steel Vehicleand addresses the technologies projected to be on the road in 2020,” said Krupitzer. “Through this project, fully engineered, steel-intensive designs of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles will be released in early 2011 to demonstrate the environmental benefits of steel.”

Hecla Mining Company today announced that its Board of Directors has
elected to declare and pay all dividends in arrears and the next
scheduled quarterly dividend for each of its outstanding series of
preferred stock. In each case, the dividend will be payable January 4,
2010, to shareholders of record on December 15, 2009.

The Hecla Series B Cumulative Convertible Preferred Stock will be paid
in cash for the dividends in arrears of $3.50 per share and the regular
quarterly dividend of $0.875 per share. There are 157,816 shares of
Series B outstanding.

For Heclas 6.5% Mandatory Convertible Preferred Stock, the dividends in
arrears of $6.50 per share and the regularly quarterly dividend of
$1.625 per share will be paid in shares of common stock of Hecla, as
permitted by the Certificate of Designations. Hecla is paying the
dividend in common shares to preserve cash for its exploration and
development programs. There are 2,012,500 shares of Mandatory

Through the agreement, The Hanover expects to acquire access to as much as $400 million in OneBeacon small and middle market commercial business at renewal, including industry programs and middle market niches. At the same time, the transaction will expand The Hanover’s segment, niche and industry program business, adding nearly 20 well established programs to its already strong portfolio. The agreement is effective for renewals beginning January 1, 2010.
